Find freedom in your roles

Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Tony winner Helen Mirren is one of the greatest actresses of our time. In her first online class, she discusses the dualism that is core to her method: the necessity for mastering technique (craft) and then letting go so that your imagination can take over (art). Learn how to break down a script, research characters, and master techniques so you can transcend them to find freedom in every role.

Helen brings you behind the scenes to show you the secrets of her acting technique.

A downloadable workbook accompanies the class with lesson recaps and supplemental materials.

Upload videos to get feedback from the class. Helen will also critique select student work.

This class got me thinking more about the importance of packing each of my characters with more backstory, considering my emotions in the moment ie the power of the camera to read my thoughts, sending my arrow and moving on, use of my eyes. Also, the value of changing emotions quickly. The value of less is more in dialogue. Thanks for the encouragement to be better.

I improve very much in acting I know the technique now . In early stage iam confused about what is mean by acting and how iam going to act in front of camera. Thanks to Helen mirren .Giving details to very little thing in acting

Really loved the intro, it feels as though you're there together in the room. the whole concept of being natural is very challenging ..

It was great to get Helen Mirren's perspective on the craft and the particular things that she focuses on.

I can't think of a single famous actor who has provided so much practical knowledge before and behind camera. I took this class to hone my skills as a director. (My experience acting frazzles my nerves.) I took this class to learn how to better walk a mile in the shoes of the actor. Helen, I sense your presence as strongly in these lessons as in your films. And that is the measure of a very fine teacher. It was a pleasure to get to know you, albeit digitally. Cheers!

Thank you for this great class! I'm only an actress in my community theater, but I have learned so much useful information. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone!

I have written screenplays but never thought i could act; even my own lines i wrote. I am inspired to become an actor now. I believe all the world is a stage but to find God discovering God is found within each human heart. Then we begin as God's lovers and all experience is Lila or God' play with us. Truly then we exist as actors.

I was told that I could go straight into Hollywood. However, lacking self-confidence, I went to acting school. It completely changed me. I've fallen apart. Now, as a professional actor... I'd like to have constant work. I enjoyed your class. It is enabling me to keep my motivations going strong with your help and advice. Thank you. God bless you :)

It was an amazing journey Helen Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge

And that, as we say in the acting business... is a wrap. What an incredible journey! I have learned more about acting than I ever could in my classes in University. Every one who aspires to act on a high level should consider this course (if they can afford it). Time to get working.

Thank you so much for this wonderful class. I'm a writer and director, not an actor, but this class taught me more about writing, directing and life on film sets that anything else I've watched. Ms. Mirren is a class act, and she really opened my eyes about how much work actors put into their jobs. This was a wonderful chance to get inside the mind of an extremely talented actor and know what they need and how best to work with them. Thank you for all of the time, work, creativity and generosity you put into this class; I very much appreciated it.

Thank you so much, Helen - for the wonderful experience of sharing your journey! I feel as though I have found a new friend in these lessons, and am so enjoying now exploring all of your films from the perspective of the things you have taught us. Wonderful course, you did such a fabulous job with it! Warm thanks to you - so glad I had the chance to participate.

People say what's, in a few words, your advice for young actors? And I always say be on time, don't be an asshole. And that's it. That's really end of story. But anyway, don't be a time waster. But if you're not a time waster, and, you know, you're there and prepared and all the rest of the things you have to be, then film sets are pretty kind to you, because you've earned it. And you can say, look, let me just try one more time or six more times or whatever. But always be polite. Try to always be on time. And be as gracious as you can, but be very careful. Be self-protective as well, because sometimes what the film or the movie want for the film or the movie is not actually what is right for you. I didn't go to drama school. I have never been to a drama class. But I have worked professionally as an actress. And it's those, you know, sometimes complicated and sometimes very simple ideas and understandings that I've picked up that I've tried to communicate with you. I hope you've had as good a time with me as I've had with you. This is the first time in my life I have ever actually talked about my career and my work in this way. And it's been quite a journey for me. Thank you so much for coming on the journey with me. It's been an education for me, as well as for you, so thank you.
