A leader in the New York City–based craft cocktail movement, Lynnette Marrero is the bar director at the Llama Inn in Brooklyn. Nicknamed “Mr Lyan,” Ryan Chetiyawardana has opened award-winning bars around the world.
[00:00:00.00] [MUSIC PLAYING] [00:00:23.81] - It is our honor to award the Wine Star for 2016 Mixologist of the Year to Lynnette Marrero. [00:00:31.54] - It's a great honor to be recognized within this beverage industry. [00:00:35.08] - Speed Rack is an all women's bartending competition that raise money for breast cancer. [00:00:39.11] - And we've raised a million to date globally for research and education. [00:00:44.09] - So I have original bar, which is called White Lyan. It tried to look at the idea of sustainability in the world of cocktails. Also had a bar called Dandelyan, which was named World's Best Bar. And we evolved that into a new venue called Lyaness. [00:00:57.47] - I'm a native nuyorican, which means my parents were born in Puerto Rico and I was born in New York. And what they brought with them was the culture and hospitality of the island. I love working with food, and I love working with chefs. And how you can be inspired by other ingredients is really important to how I developed my philosophy. [00:01:15.32] We helped bring back some esoteric ingredients that had fallen out of fashion, which now are in all the classic cocktails and top bars. [00:01:22.94] - So over the years, I've kind of done some pretty weird and wonderful things. I've been a fan of using some kind of unusual ingredients, rare ingredients. We've developed different techniques, different ways of processing ingredients, things that really help push the boundaries of what our tastes can be, and what our comfort zones can be. I can't wait to stock up my at-home bar and give some of these recipes a try. I feel empowered, educated, and encouraged (to make, to host, to serve, to drink). I also loved all the modeling of technique and style and passion from both Lynnette and Ryan.
