Keep in mind that it can be difficult to change camera settings when your hands are cold, so it might be a good idea to bring a few hand warmers with you or some gloves.

8. __Shoot in bulb mode for longer exposures__. If you’re working with extra-long exposures (longer than 30 seconds) you’re going to need to set your DSLR to bulb mode. This is the ideal setting for light painting and other experimental styles, but in order to keep your camera stable, you may want to invest in a remote shutter release.
9. __Make sure you’re shooting RAW__. The downgrade in quality that JPEG introduces can kill your nighttime shots, so stick with RAW. You’ll be thankful to be working with unprocessed images if you want to play around with your colors in post-processing.
