[James Patterson](https://www.masterclass.com/classes/james-patterson-teaches-writing) was born in 1947 and raised in Newburgh, New York. He studied English at Vanderbilt University, and found work as a junior copywriter at the advertising agency, J Walter Thompson Co, where he devised the iconic slogan, “I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid.” 

While he became CEO and chairman of the company’s North American division in 1988 and 1990, James pursued a career in novel writing. In 1993, James released *Along Came a Spider*, which became an explosive commercial success. Today, he is the world’s best selling author and holds the distinction of writing more number-one *New York Times* bestsellers than any other writer in history. James’s books have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, with many of his novels becoming bestselling series, including the Alex Cross series, the Michael Bennett series, the Women’s Murder Club Series, the NYPD Red series, and the Middle School series—his foray into children’s books.

The first book in this series follows Chicago detective Billy Harney as he investigates a series of murders, which seem to be connected to the disappearance of a famed black book. The book peaked at number one on the *New York Times* bestseller list and spent seven weeks on the *Los Angeles Times* bestseller list. 
6. __*Murder Games* (2017)__: Co-written with Howard Roughan, Murder Games is the first in a five-part series following professor and criminal behavior specialist Dylan Reinhart, who must solve a murder that appears to be connected to one of his books. It spent four weeks on the *Los Angeles Times* bestsellers list. 
7. __*The President Is Missing* (2018)__: Patterson collaborated with former President Bill Clinton to write this novel about betrayal, espionage, and a national threat that puts the entire country at risk. The story takes place over a period of three days, in which time the president becomes a suspect and he himself goes missing. The novel made it to number one on the *New York Times* bestsellers list.
