What Is Yakisoba Sauce?

Yakisoba sauce is a key ingredient in many Japanese recipes, namely yakisoba, stir-fried noodles. The tangy seasoning is typically a mixture of Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce, mirin, and ketchup. While you can buy packaged yakisoba sauce at well-stocked Asian grocery stores, it's simple to make at home. You can also substitute it with any of the range of Worcestershire sauce-like condiments sold in Japan, such as okonomiyaki sauce or tonkatsu sauce.

What Is Yakisoba?

Yakisoba, which means "fried noodles," is a Japanese stir-fried noodle dish. Yakisoba is traditionally made with wheat-based yakisoba noodles known as chukasoba or chukamen, mixed with pork and veggies. “Chuka” means noodle in Chinese, reflecting this dish’s origins; Both wheat noodles (including ramen noodles) and the technique of stir-frying noodles came to Japan by way of China. Yakisoba is essentially a Japanese version of the Chinese dish chow mein. One popular variation is yakisoba pan, a hot dog bun filled with leftover yakisoba.

Ingredients

  • 1½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, preferably Japanese
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mirin
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • ¼ teaspoon sriracha or other hot sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, mirin, ketchup, and hot sauce.
