Depending on where the ball is passed or dribbled to, they will shift their position to accommodate the change, try to steal the ball, stop a shot, or get the rebound. If the ball is passed to the wing, whether through a direct or skip pass, the ball-side wing defender comes out to apply ball pressure, while the post defender gets up close to any offensive player to prevent a shot or a pass.

In the case of the ball being passed to the corner, whether direct or skip-passed, the strong side post player comes out to pressure the ball handler, while the weak side post player crosses to the opposite side of the key.
