Understanding the Role of a Best Boy on a Film Set

There are many departments that come together to run a film production. Nearly every film set requires a grip department and an electrical department. The electrical department, led by the gaffer, manages and runs the lighting during every scene, whereas the grip department, led by the key grip, is in charge of all rigging behind the scenes. The head of these departments each has a second in command, known as the “best boy.”
