The Origins of the Hurricane Cocktail

Popularized at Pat O’Brien’s New Orleans bar during World War II, its name allegedly comes from the hurricane lamp-shaped glass it’s served in. The Hurricane became a staple among visitors to the French Quarter in the 1940s.

Classic Hurricane Recipe

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • 2 ounces passion fruit juice
  • ½ ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon simple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon grenadine
  • Orange wheel, for garnish
  • Maraschino cherry, for garnish
  1. Pour rum, juice, simple syrup, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes. Shake well.
  2. Strain into a Hurricane glass over crushed ice.
  3. Garnish with an orange wheel and cherry.
